Posted: Jun 20, 2007 Post subject: Has anyone registered a kit car in France? If so, how? |

We have a Blackjack Avion car built in 1999, it's a three-wheel (2 at the front, 1 at the rear with a Citroen 2CV engine. The car is in good condition and has a current MOT. It's huge fun and we'd like to bring this down to France in our forthcoming move; however a few French insurance companies have said it will be impossible to register as it is outside of the vehicle classifications! Someone suggested registering it as a 'tricycle a moteur' but yet another shook his head and suggested 'voiture de collection', at which point someone else said that was impossible as it wasn't over 20 year old. All of them said to avoid contacting DRIRE (Department des Mines) if possible as I would end up buried under paperwork for months!
So, as you see, I'm slightly stuck with what to do next and if there's anyone reading this who has managed to get their kit car registered in France, by whatever means, and insured, then I'd really welcome their advice and tips.
Many thanks in advance for reading this and hopefully there's someone out there who can tell how to get through the French bureaucracy.
